DOCTOR TANYA BANFIELD

CHARTERED PSYCHOLOGIST
EXTENSIVE FORENSIC EXPERIENCE

DIAGNOSED ADHD

Dr Tanya Banfield is a Chartered Psychologist providing coaching, psychotherapy, consultation, and guidance since 2015.  Prior to entering private practice in 2022, Tanya worked as a psychologist in several forensic and social justice and settings.  Tanya specialises in working with people who identify as being neurodivergent.  She also has a particular interest in working with people with combined diagnoses such as Autism and ADHD.  Being neurodivergent herself, Tanya has a unique ‘insider-insider’ perspective.  She recognises that many individuals have not had access to formal diagnoses, and she is passionate about working with individuals who are going through the criminal justice system.

She has worked with neurodivergent adults within the criminal justice system to develop wellbeing, coping and resilience that altered their internal perspectives and view of the world on a long-term basis.  Tanya designed and developed interventions that her clients were able to harness, develop and make their own.  Her core values are centred around advocacy and inclusion.  Tanya has extensive experience looking at offending behaviours and make sense of them from a neurodivergent perspective.

She has created detailed assessments and treatment plans for young people with a wide variety of mental health challenges in a range of settings from HM Prisons, probations and in the workplace.  Tanya has spent six years working with neurodivergent offenders to rehabilitate them and develop the internal and external tools to seek, gain and sustain employment.

Tanya has spent her entire career helping individuals address issues including anxiety, stress, self-esteem, perfectionism, career changes, anger management, conflict resolution, depression, stress management and managing neurodivergency in the workplace.

Tanya is passionate about treating each client as unique and individual. She will work collaboratively to understand each clients situation, their backstory, their motivations and their subsequent behaviours.

Tanya is qualified to doctorate level; she is a chartered psychologist with a specialist interest working with people who are neurodivergent and are caught up in the criminal justice system.  She is registered with the British Psychological Society and is also on the HCPC register.

Tanya is able to prepare pre-court reports and also be a witness in court if required.

See what Tanya’s previous clients have said …

Thanks SO much Dr Tanya. Your report is exactly what we see in him as a family and always have.

It was like you knew him inside out – everything we were describing to the criminal justice teams and mental health services about him was a snapshot of him but you nailed all that to ADHD/ASD traits which explains so much, things I’d not even thought of as to why he does things differently.

The services wouldn’t listen when he was younger in the North East, here in Manchester. CPN has been good but obviously its been so hard to try and get him diagnosed on the NHS and its very lengthy process with years of waiting for the meds and every day is a battle for him in his own thoughts. I even suspect he has PTSD from the trauma of all this.

Even with his own father having taken his own life when my nephew was only three days old, and knowing the higher risk of suicide in undiagnosed ADHD people, we still couldn’t get anybody to listen to my nephew.

No one has ever listened to us, apart from you, and now he finally feels heard, and that somebody is understanding what is going on in his head.

We have been trying to get my nephew assessed for ADHD and Autism for such a long time now but it’s so hard as waiting lists are horrendous.

Thank you for this, you described him 100% accurately!

And thank you so much for organising via the solicitor to be able to interview him by video link into the Prison. I didn’t even know this was possible but I’m so grateful for you making it happen.
